Mr Samir Somaiya speaking at Dubai Sugar Conference

May 17, 2022

Speaking at the Dubai Sugar Conference 2022, Chairman, Godavari Biorefineries Limited and President,  Somaiya Vidyavihar Mr. Samir Somaiya spoke about the transformation of Indian Sugar Industry to produce Ethanol. He emphasised on how this transformation has led to multifold changes, paving way towards India’s energy security, enhancing farmer’s income and combating climate change.

He showcased the current roadmap to Ethanol announced by the Honourable Prime Minister last June as an energy supplement for India’s growing energy need.

The Government has articulated a blending target of 20% by 2025. This move has encouraged Indian Sugar producers to innovate and diversify. During the conference he quotes.

As an Indian miller, I explained our journey of rising to the occasion by expanding our Ethanol facility and diverting more than 30% of our sugar in cane to Ethanol. Godavari Biorefineries Limited is one illustrative example of Indian mills adapting to this opportunity and challenge. We are all transforming in small ways and large, slowly and fast, but surely so. The current geopolitics reinforces the point that we need to build self sufficiency in food and energy. And this is a way that simultaneously helps farmer’s income and mitigates climate change. The entire programme is being built in a spirit of teamwork with the industry, the Government, Customers (Oil Companies), Workers, and most importantly the Farmers working together to make this vision a reality.

Godavari Biorefineries Limited contributes to Ethanol Blending Program by pioneering the use of sugarcane syrup for making ethanol

Aug 10, 2020

Of these, 35 million litres was derived from Sugarcane syrup and B Heavy molasses. Godavari Biorefineries pioneered the use of sugarcane syrup for making ethanol by diverting more than 30% of sugarcane directly following the Brazilian model.

Godavari Biorefineries Ltd. manufactured the ethanol in its distillery with a production capacity of 320,000 litres per day. In the coming season, we will be expanding the distillery to manufacture 400,000 litres per day of ethanol. We aim to deliver more than 70 million litres of ethanol to the blending programme during the next sugar season.

Godavari Biorefineries Ltd. Earns USDA Certified Biobased Product Label for Acetic Acid.

Mar 12, 2019

Godavari Biorefineries Ltd. has earned the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Certified Biobased Product label. The product, Acetic Acid Glacial, is now able to display a unique USDA label that highlights its percentage of biobased content. Third-party verification for a product's biobased content is administered through the USDA BioPreferred Program, an initiative created by the 2002 Farm Bill (and most recently expanded by the 2014 Farm Bill). One of the goals of the BioPreferred Program is to increase the development, purchase and use of biobased products. The USDA Certified Biobased Product label displays a product's biobased content, which is the portion of a product that comes from a renewable source, such as plant, animal, marine, or forestry feedstocks. Utilizing renewable, biobased materials displaces the need for non-renewable petroleum-based chemicals. Biobased products, through petroleum displacement, have played an increasingly important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions that exacerbate global climate change. Biobased products are cost-comparative, readily available, and perform as well as or better than their conventional counterparts.

Samir Somaiya, Chairman and Managing Director, Godavari Biorefineries Ltd. said, “We have always believed that renewable resources can meaningfully supplement the needs of our planet and help achieve a sustainable future, so necessary for the generations to come after us. Godavari Biorefineries has pioneered the use of agricultural feedstock to make foods, energy, chemicals and biomaterials. We are proud to add acetic acid, made from renewable resources to our portfolio.”

"We applaud Godavari Biorefineries Ltd. for earning the USDA Certified Biobased Product label," said Kate Lewis, USDA BioPreferred Program. "Products from Godavari Biorefineries Ltd. are contributing to an ever expanding marketplace that adds value to renewable agriculture commodities, creates jobs in rural communities, and decreases our reliance on petroleum." According to a report that USDA released in 2016, biobased products contributed $393 billion to the U.S. economy in 2014 and support, directly and indirectly, 4.2 million jobs. In this report, the research team estimate petroleum displacement of up to 6.8 million barrels in 2014. The increased production of renewable chemicals and biobased products contributes to the development and expansion of the U.S. bioeconomy - where society looks to agriculture for sustainable sources of fuel, energy, chemicals, and products.
